Most of the time, when we are venting to our friends or partners, it is to do just that-vent! It is important to understand that unless you are asked to give advice or solutions, don't. Just be there so the other person can share their anger, frustration, or whatever it is. Even if you are coming from a good place, putting your two cents where it doesn't belong can come across as invalidating, judgmental, condescending, controlling, or "teachery." If we want to nourish our relationships with others, we need to try to understand what is happening for them. That means, we give them our attention, empathy, and support when they need it-and that is all until they ask for more.
